In waterbirthing, a woman remains in the water for delivery.

Birthing Pangs

The American Academy of Pediatrics has expressed concerns about delivering in water because of a lack of studies showing its safety and because of the rare but reported chance of complications. Physicians , nurse practitioners , physician assistants , nurses and midwives will typically ask the woman in labor if there is a need of pain relief. Many pain relief options work well when given by a trained and experienced clinician.

Clinicians also can use different methods for pain relief at different stages of labor. Still, not all options are available at every hospital and birthing center. Depending on the health history of the mother, the presence of allergies or other concerns, some choices will work better than others. There are many methods of pain relief during labor. Opioids are a type of analgesia that is commonly used during childbirth to assist in pain relief.

These medications may cause unwanted side effects like drowsiness, itching, nausea, or vomiting to the laboring mother. All opioids can cross the placenta and may poorly affect the baby by causing problems with heart rate, breathing, or brain function. For this reason, opioids are not given close to delivery. Their use also does not seem to be linked to a higher chance of cesarean sections.

Asking questions about the procedures and medications which may affect the baby are valid questions. An epidural is a procedure that involves placing a tube catheter into the lower back, into a small space below the spinal cord. Small doses of medicine can be given through the tube as needed throughout labor. With a spinal block, a small dose of medicine is given as a shot into the spinal fluid in the lower back. Spinal blocks usually are given only once during labor. Epidural and spinal blocks allow most women to be awake and alert with very little pain during labor and childbirth.

With an epidural, pain relief starts 10 to 20 minutes after the medicine has been given. The degree of numbness felt can be adjusted. With spinal block, good pain relief starts right away, but it only lasts one to two hours.

Although movement is possible, walking may not be if the medication affects motor function. An epidural can lower blood pressure , which can slow your baby's heartbeat. Fluids given through IV are given to lower this risk. Fluids can cause shivering. But women in labor often shiver with or without an epidural.

If the covering of the spinal cord is punctured by the catheter, a bad headache may develop. Treatment can help the headache. An epidural can cause a backache that can occur for a few days after labor. An epidural can prolong the first and second stages of labor. If given late in labor or if too much medicine is used, it might be hard to push when the time comes.

An epidural increases risk of assisted vaginal delivery. In this procedure a doctor injects numbing medicine into the vagina and the nearby pudendal nerve. This nerve carries sensation to the lower part of the vagina and vulva. This method of pain control is only used late in labor, usually right before the baby's head comes out. With a pudendal block, there is some pain relief but the laboring woman remains awake, alert, and able to push the baby out.

The baby is not affected by this medicine and it has very few disadvantages. Another form of pharmacologic pain relief available for laboring mothers is inhaled nitrous oxide. Although this method of pain control does not provide as much pain relief as an epidural, there are many benefits to this type of analgesia. He cried as he told the story how that very bed had crushed his wife. As never before, he realized how meaningless material success was and how pursuing it had deceived him into thinking it would satisfy him.

When the relationships with his family he had taken for granted were gone, he was forced to examine what really mattered to him. Weeping, he told interviewers he wanted to never be the same again. This man was a Muslim. He had learned a great lesson from this awesome warning. This lesson is for all who, like this man, either inadvertently or deliberately abandon their conscience to seek after the things of this world. The world is haywire, reeling on the edge of destruction because of selfishness and denial of God and His ways.

Earthquakes are a warning that a day is coming, the Last Day, when all men will have to give an account to the Righteous Judge. The Twelve Tribes is a confederation of twelve self-governing tribes, composed of self-governing communities. We are disciples of the Son of God whose name in Hebrew is Yahshua. We follow the pattern of the early church in Acts and , truly believing everything that is written in the Old and New Covenants of the Bible, and sharing all things in common. Skip to main content.

There, the Lord speaks through Isaiah, specifically contrasting the expectations of the Jewish people regarding deliverance, redemption and physical resurrection with the reality of the pain, suffering and travail that they had corporately experienced. O LORD, they sought you in distress; they could only whisper a prayer, your chastening was upon them. As the pregnant woman approaches the time to give birth, she writhes and cries out in her labor pains, thus were we before you, O LORD.

We were pregnant, we writhed in labor, we gave birth, as it seems, only to wind. We could not accomplish deliverance for the earth, nor were inhabitants of the world born. But then the Lord interjects and promises that despite the great pains of the past, the day is indeed coming when Israel will in fact give birth. The promises of the Lord ring out:. Your dead will live; their corpses will rise. You who lie in the dust, awake and shout for joy, For your dew is as the dew of the dawn, and the earth will give birth to the departed spirits.

Come, my people, enter into your rooms and close your doors behind you; hide for a little while until indignation runs its course. For behold, the LORD is about to come out from His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity; and the earth will reveal her bloodshed and will no longer cover her slain. Later, in Isaiah 66, the themes of birth and resurrection are emphasized once again.

What is so interesting about this particular reference is that it specifically addresses the paradox that the Messiah would actually be born long before the labor pains even begin:. Who has heard such a thing? Who has seen such things? Gone would be the days of labor pains without birth. The Lord promises that He will indeed bring about the messianic age.

  7. With it will come the redemption, resurrection, vindication and many comforts of that glorious age. Can a nation be brought forth all at once? As soon as Zion travailed, she also brought forth her sons. Shall I bring to the point of birth and not give delivery? Be joyful with Jerusalem and rejoice for her, all you who love her; be exceedingly glad with her, all you who mourn over her, that you may nurse and be satisfied with her comforting breasts, that you may suck and be delighted with her bountiful bosom.

As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; And you will be comforted in Jerusalem. Then you will see this, and your heart will be glad, And your bones will flourish like the new grass; And the hand of the LORD will be made known to His servants, but He will be indignant toward His enemies. The initial labor pains begin, increasingly becoming worse, until finally, the birth takes place.

Obviously, because the events of 70 A. Great comments Joel. I would also point out that Revelation 12 is a continuation of the woman in labor. Revelation 12 has strong parallels to Isaiah The symbol of the woman in labor is also used in 1 Thessalonians But most symbols have their root in the literal. The only reason that i can think of why people think Jesus was talking about 70AD is because Jesus said this would all happen in that Generation,. Nice commentary Joel. I do enjoy all your work. And actaully — I hate to post this here but after emailing you at 3 different email addresses and getting no response — I just want an answer please.

I look forward to reading it — please check your emails and respond please. Kindest regards. I think there were two generations that would not pass away, until all these things have happened. The generation of Christ was focused upon in Luke That adult generation did not pass away until they saw Jerusalem surrounded by armies in 70 AD Luke After that, the time of the Gentiles continued with Jerusalem being trampled upon by Gentiles Luke until This marked the adult end-time generation, as focused upon in Matthew That adult baby-boom generation will not pass away before the return of Christ and the end of the great tribulation.

There are a few possible explanations for how genea relates to this end time prophecy. Some say it simply means race. Some say it is a reference to the final generation.

My view is a bit more nuanced. I believe that Jesus used it to ultimately refer to the final generation that sees the events described in the prophecy, but it also had a bit of a double meaning, subtly pointing to those who would witness and experience the events of 70 A. Preterists will argue that it can only mean one thing. Apparently Jesus is not allowed to speak in a more nuanced, subtle manner, using any form of hint or double meaning, unless he first receives their permission. In my view, Luke 21 is also future, an end-time prophecy. By the time the Roman armies arrived at and surrounded Jerusalem, it was much too late to depart or flee to the mountains.
